The Inside Story with Mike Kinosian: Talk
tumbles, Adult hits arrives - the Summer
book.
Summertime Stats And Stories
Succumbing to Tryptophan-induced logy-ness this Thanksgiving
weekend would have been easy - but instead, the extra time was put
to non-stop use to satisfy an intense craving about exactly what
happened in the summer book.
As you digest the following
spread, it’s important to keep in mind several key ingredients.
All facts and figures are based on 12+-Summer (2005)
Arbitron information from the Top 50 markets - excluding No. 13
Puerto Rico and No. 46 New Orleans.
In order to be
considered, stations had to register at least a 1.0 share (12+) this
summer, and all comparisons are to summer 2004.
Most
Essential Nugget Once the dust settled, approximately 1100
stations met my requirements.
After poring through all the
data, it all boiled down to this: 45% notched summer-summer
improvement; 48% were down; and 7% were flat.
Fluctuations By Market Take a look at how each
Top 50 market performed compared to last summer’s 12+ info.
Markets are arranged in descending order of 12+-improvement.
Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Houston boasted instances where at
least six of every 10 stations witnessed year-to-year (12+) growth.
Only St. Louis managed to turn in an identical number of
ups/downs and no stations remaining the same.

No. 1 By Format
Notwithstanding the earlier mention that several within its
ranks suffered noticeable summer-summer dips, Talk placed the most
No. 1s (13).
Country managed to be runner-up, despite the
fact only two of its 11 No. 1s came from the Top 20.
The
typical Top 50 Market Talk station that was No. 1 12+ this summer
had an 8.3 in that demo. That’s approximately 11% better than the
average of all Top 50 Market summer No. 1s.

How Tight? The distance that No. 1 Infinity
Talker KMOX/St. Louis (4.2 shares) and Clear Channel Talk outlet
WLW/Cincinnati (4.1 shares) enjoy between their respective market
second-place finishers is considerably more than the Top 50 Market

It was customary this summer that the No. 2 station
in a Top 50 market trailed the pacesetter by 1.17 shares.
The typical leading station held a 7.51 – 6.34 advantage.
