The Inside Story
with Mike Kinosian: Time Spent Listening — market by market.
Time
Capsules
Our follow-up to last week’s Spring 2005 Time Spent
Listening piece is a market-by-market breakout of the 25 largest metros.
In order to be included in this exclusive “Inside Story” overview, a
station had to post at least a 2-share (12+) in Arbitron’s spring survey.
Over 460 stations qualified, representing 30 different formats.
Stations in each market listing are noted in descending order of 12+ TSL
(shown in Minutes Per Day).
The figure at the far right reflects a
station’s overall 12+ Average Quarter Hour rank.
The 26th-largest metro
(Sacramento) appears in place of Puerto Rico (Market No. 13).
First
Notable Nugget The end result of constructing and then sifting through a
miniature mountain of statistics is that the typical Top 25 Market station with
at least a 2-share this spring picks up just under an hour (59.38 minutes) of
listening each day.
As noted in the top line of the market header,
representative daily 12+ listening for a New York City station (Market No. 1) is
66.31 minutes per day.
• There’s a full hour per day’s difference between “Mega 97.9” (WSKQ)
and “1010 WINS.” • Pacesetting 12+ TSL stations for Classical (WQXR); Rock
(WXRK); and Tropical (WSKQ) are in The Big Apple.
• Urban AC and Urban Contemporary dominate the
top five spots in Arbitron’s original Portable People Meter test market.
