The Inside Story with Mike Kinosian: Minute By Minute — the latest on TSL by format.

Minute By Minute

Two unrelated situations have propelled Time Spent Listening back into the top-of-mind spotlight.

Some very compelling diary comments that Inside Radio shared with readers this past Monday (10-3-2005) underscored the pivotal, tireless – and in many cases even courageous - role our medium played with Katrina/Rita coverage.

Gulf Coast residents understandably indicated they were glued to (battery-powered) radios for as much as 12- and 24-hour continuous segments.

Not that it was done for that purpose, of course, but stations won’t benefit from such unnatural and unrealistic listening patterns, since Arbitron doesn’t intend to release the usual summer and fall books for New Orleans, or the fall survey for Biloxi.

PPM
Meanwhile, regarding Arbitron’s Portable People Meter (PPM), Bill Tanner commented to Inside Radio (9-29-2005) that “any station that depends on TSL for the majority of their quarter-hours is going to be hit.”

Spanish Broadcasting’s former Executive VP/Programming forecasts Spanish and Urban will suffer the greatest losses.

Facts & Figures
So let’s bring the TSL issue into sharper focus with the initial installment of my comprehensive “Inside Story” overview based on Arbitron 12+ Top 25 Market data.

It spans nearly 475 stations and 30 different format categories.

Stations needed to register at least a 2-share this past spring (2005) in order to be included.
Based on those criteria, formats are ranked from highest Spring 2005 TSL to lowest; stations within each format are likewise noted in descending order.

Believing it to be a more relatable statistic, I’ve compiled and converted Time Spent Listening numbers in Minutes Per Day, rather than Hours Per Week.

Following a station’s market size, calls, metro and average daily 12+ TSL is its 12+-market rank.

Not surprisingly, niche formats rank high and are followed by more mainstream formats.

The nation’s 26th-largest market (Sacramento) was substituted for Puerto Rico (Market No. 13).

Spanish News/Talk: 110.5
12 WAQI-AM/Miami 133 06
12 WQBA-AM/Miami 88 21

• In Market No. 12, the typical WAQI-AM listener spends 133 minutes a day with the Miami Spanish News/Talk station that ranks sixth overall (12+).

• Combined with fellow format rep WQBA-AM (coincidentally in the same market), the two-station format average is an incredibly lofty 110.5 minutes (nearly two hours) a day.

TSL & Market Rank Correlation

The typical Top 25 Market CHR/Pop station ranked sixth (No. 6.09) this spring (12+). That’s good enough – albeit by a whisker over Urban Contemporary - to place first in the field of 30 formats.

As noted above, however, CHR/Pop is next to last in terms of TSL.

Other such noticeable disparities in that vein are News (last in TSL, but 4th in 12+ Rank); CHR/Rhythmic (24th in TSL/6th in Rank); and Urban Contemporary (13th in TSL/2nd in Rank).

There’s inconsistency the other way with the admittedly fragile two-station Spanish News/Talk sample (1st in TSL, but a distant 25th in Rank); Adult Standards (3rd in TSL/28th in 12+ Rank); Classical (11th in TSL/29th in Rank); Tropical (6th in TSL/20th in Rank); and Gospel & Inspirational (7th in TSL/21st in Rank).

In terms of TSL and overall 12+-market rank, the six steadiest performers were Urban AC; Talk, Smooth Jazz; Christian AC; Active Rock; and Adult Hits.

Progress Report
A major concern around the industry is that younger demos are abandoning terrestrial radio in favor of personal music players.

When comparing Top 25 Market CHR/Pop 12+ spring 2004/spring 2005 TSL figures, we notice that 64% were either steady or improved.

WKST/Pittsburgh’s 45 minutes per day in spring 2004, for example, increased by nine minutes this past spring to 54.
