The Inside
Story with Mike Kinosian: Inside the Spring Arbitrons — the top 50
markets.
Demo Dominators
As Continuous Measurement Market stations anticipate receiving their
Summer report cards, it’s a perfect time to take a Spring ratings snapshot in an
exclusive Top 50 Market “Inside Story” overview, which breaks out No. 1
finishers in four major demos by format and group ownership.
In
addition, I’ve indexed a station’s No. 1 demo performance against 12+ rankings.
Dual asterisks (**) denote non-metro stations; Puerto Rico (Market No.
13) was not included in this ratings analysis.
Adults 18 – 34
Nearly 50% of Top 50 Market stations (47%) finishing first this Spring
among Adults 18-34 are part of Clear Channel.
New York’s “Z100” (WHTZ) accomplished the feat in Long
Island and Middlesex-Somerset-Union (NJ), but not in its home market, where it
ranked a respectable fourth.
By market size, Clear Channel’s No. 1 18-34
stations include: WGCI-FM/Chicago; KMEL/San Francisco; WUSL/Philadelphia;
WJMN/Boston; WKQI/Detroit; KUBE/Seattle; WHTZ/Long Island**; KSLZ/St. Louis
WBTP/Tampa; WKST/Pittsburgh; WEBN/Cincinnati; KGGI/Riverside; WKKV/Milwaukee;
KSJO/San Jose; WHJY/Providence; WNCI/Columbus; WIBT/Charlotte; WHTZ/Middlesex**;
WOWI/Norfolk; WUBT/Nashville; WQUE/New Orleans; WKRK/Memphis; and

and KBBT/San Antonio, while Emmis delivered 6%, including WQHT/New York;
KPWR/Los Angeles and KROX/Austin.
The remaining No. 1s came from eight
different group owners: WEDR/Miami (Cox); KXXR/Minneapolis (ABC); KQKS/Denver
(Jefferson-Pilot); KXJM/Portland (Rose City); KPRS/Kansas City (Carter);
KXRK/Salt Lake City (Simmons); WJMH/Greensboro (Entercom); and WCCC/Hartford
(Marlin).
More than one of every three Top 50 Market stations (35%) that
finished first this spring (18-34) is a Rhythmic CHR, including a representative
in three of the top four markets and six of the top 10.
The full list includes: WQHT/New York;
KPWR/Los Angeles; KMEL/San Francisco; KBXX/Houston; WPGC-FM/Washington;
WJMN/Boston; KUBE/Seattle; KQKS/Denver; KXJM/Portland; KSFM/Sacramento;
KGGI/Riverside; KBBT/San Antonio; WIBT/Charlotte; WJHM/Orlando;

Spring (Adults 18-34) are Clear Channel-owned: WHTZ/Long Island**; KSLZ/St.
Louis; WKST/Pittsburgh; WNCI/Columbus; and WHTZ/Middlesex**.
Regional
Mexican comprises 8% of the Top 50 Market No. 1s (18-34) and the first three are
Univision properties: KESS/Dallas; KHOT & KHOV/Phoenix; KLNV/San Diego; and
KSJO/San Jose.
Rounding out this Spring’s Top 50 Market 18-34 No. 1s are
Active Rock (4%) KXXR/Minneapolis and WCCC/Hartford; Rock (4%) WEBN/Cincinnati
and WHJY/Providence; Alternative (4%) KXRK/Salt Lake City and KROX/Austin; and
Hot AC (2%) KMXB/Las Vegas.
In approximately 45% of cases, a Top 50
Market station that placed first 18-34 was also No. 1 (16%) or No. 2 (29%) 12+.
